The crossbow: a genuine alternative to the Swiss cross
At the General Meeting in Bern on 9 June 2009, the President of SWISS LABEL, National Councillor Bruno Zuppiger, was again able to look back on a successful business year: The number of members continues to grow strongly and has practically tripled since the re-launch, six years ago: The crossbow lives - contrary to all prophecies of doom. After the General Meeting, a panel discussion was held on the future of the crossbow after the intended liberalisation of the Swiss cross.![]()
SWISS LABEL, the association for the promotion of Swiss products and services with the crossbow symbol, is experiencing a boom, in contrast to the current economic situation: in 2008 a total of 60 new memberships were able to be recorded; in the present year a further 21 new members have again been added to date. Presently, SWISS LABEL is able to boast 370 members.
The most important event for SWISS LABEL during the past year was the proposed "Swissness legislative amendment". Our association fundamentally supports the suggested changes to the coat of arms statute, as this will clarify the rules relating to its use and allow instances of misuse of the Swiss cross to be better countered. Even in the case of a liberalisation of the Swiss cross, SWISS LABEL wishes to continue to retain its independent role and make a contribution to "Swissness" and to strengthening the place of commerce and employment that is Switzerland. A survey of members has shown that less than five percent wish to dissolve the association; the majority support the status quo and a large minority supports more stringent rules and requirements than those for the Swiss cross.
In the current year the following five activities have been given the highest priority: strengthened marketing efforts, with the objective of giving swiss label and the crossbow even greater visibility; monitoring and maintaining up-to-date contact information; a continuation and increase in dialogue with members; the definitive clarification of the relationship between the crossbow and the swiss cross in the light of the discussions concerning the proposed "swissness legislative amendment"; making a start on the preparatory work in respect of the renewal of the crossbow in many countries, which will become due in 2011; closer collaboration with allied partners, the better use of synergies.
